Happy Valentine’s day! For those of you lucky enough to have dates on this day or any day, it’s always possible said date will be watching a movie. And if you’re two WLW, the ideal movie might be a lesbian movie. But while there are a lot of WLW movies and even a lot of good WLW movies, not all of them are good lesbian date movies. Circumstance for example is an excellent movie but you end if feeling so depressed and burnt out that if you watch it on a date, nobody’s going to get kissed. Here are some movies that are the opposite of that.
1. Carol
As one of the more well-known WLW films, Carol is a film for an earlier date. You don’t want to scare off your date too early on with obscure, challenging or indie films. Instead, watch this Oscar nominated love story of two women in the 1950’s. Impress your date by sounding intelligent when you use words like cinematography all the while both of you are probably just thinking about getting absolutely railed by Cate Blanchett wearing unimpeachable lipstick. Read my full review here.
Carol can be rented or purchased through Amazon.
2. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a classy, artsy movie. It is an absolutely sumptuous film to look at. The film won best screenplay and the queer palm at the prestigious Cannes film festival. Portrait of a Lady on Fire tells the story of a painter named Marianne who is obliged to secretly paint a wedding portrait of a woman named Héloïse. Of course, they fall in love. And not just any love but intellectually and artistically stimulating, feminist love. This is a great lesbian date movie if you want to look classy and cultured. Pair this movie with a dinner by candlelight that features fancy ingredients like sea salt or balsamic something or other. Read my full review of Portrait of a Lady on Fire here.
Rent, purchase or stream Portrait of a Lady on Fire through Amazon.
3. Rafiki
Valentine’s Day is a winter holiday. So, depending where you live, that maybe means it’s still cold and dark outside. Rafiki is a good film to combat the winter blues. This Kenyan film tells follows a love story that blooms between two women named Kena and Ziki. Despite living in a society that has specific expectations on both of them as women, Kena and Ziki find that true happiness if being together. Rafiki is a good winter date movie because it features not only a warm location but bold colours, lively music and passionate, joyful scenes between Kena and Ziki. Check out my full review of Rafiki here.
Rafiki can be viewed through Amazon.
4. Summertime
This is a movie for that substantial section of the WLW community interested in “cottagecore”. Summertime is a simple love story set in 1970s France. Delphine and Carole initially meet in Paris as they are both members of a feminist group. But when Delphine’s father has a stroke, she is obligated to return to her family farm. Carole accompanies her and the women spend a sunlit season of love and self-sustainability. Summertime is a a lesbian date movie for a day when you’re waiting on a loaf of homemade bread to rise. While it’s playing, discuss the name and breed of dog you plan on adopting once you finally get to live your dreams of retiring to the countryside and making a living through weaving and jam making. Read my full Summertime review here.
Summertime is available through on Amazon.
5. Thelma
Horror movies are classic date movies for a reason. The potential for fear gives an excuse to hold hands to cuddle close to a person. Plus, they’re just fun. Thelma is a horror movie with themes of lesbian repression. Also, despite the genre, it ends happily and features zero dead lesbians. But the path to this ending has some creepy and very stressful moments that might require a cuddle. Thelma is a lesbian date movie best watched on a rainy evening curled under a warm blanket together. Check out my full review here.
Thelma can be rented or purchased through Amazon.
6. The Chinese Botanist’s Daughter
A great way to bond with someone is to cry together. Once you’ve been emotionally vulnerable to one another, connection will happen quickly. The Chinese Botanist’s Daughter is a way to fast-track that connection. This film focuses on a love story that blooms between two Chinese women learning botany. However, the society they live in does not recognize or accept their love. The film ends in tragedy but remains beautiful throughout. You will cry. But it’s the kind of cry that would lead easily into a wonderful cuddle session while you and your date cling to each other and think how lucky you are to have someone to hold like this. Read my full review here.
The Chinese Botanist’s Daughter can be purchased on DVD through Amazon.
7. Love My Life
Not all love stories are epic. Some are gentle and comfortable. Love My Life is a story about a young woman named Ichiko who comes out to her father only for him to reveal he and Ichiko’s mother were also gay. After this is quickly resolved, Ichiko and her girlfriend Eri have minor relationship conflicts like a flirtation with another woman and the time constraints of being a student. The film’s major drawback is also its major success; Love My Life is too busy being cute to feature any real conflict. The film constantly veers off-topic to just show scenes of Ichiko and Eri going on cute dates. This is a sweet lesbian date movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon before or after doing a domestic task like meal prep with your partner. Read my full Love my Life review here.
Love my Life is available for purchase on Amazon.
8. Liquid Sky
Maybe you or date had a hard time in 2020 because you enjoy night clubbing. Liquid Sky is the WLW film that has the closest vibe a nightclub. You might get a cocaine contact high from watching it. This 80’s weird-fest is about a UFO in search of drugs that lands on the roof of bisexual, androgynous model Margaret’s apartment. The aliens observe her go to clubs, do drugs and wear truly insane clothing. The UFO also feed off the energy she releases when she orgasms. Sadly, this has the side effect of killing Margaret’s sexual partners. Follow up the film by setting up some mood lighting and club music and turning your own home into a nightclub for two. Or, after seeing the sheer insanity of Liquid Sky, maybe your desire for nightclubs has worn off and you just go to bed. Either is good. Read my full review here.
This cult classic can be purchased on Amazon.
9. Two of Us
Two of Us is a lesbian date movie for establishing or reasserting your commitment to your partner. The film is the story of a senior lesbian couple. Mado has not let her family know she’s in a relationship with another woman. So, when Mado suffers a stroke, her partner Nina is not recognized as family or a caregiver. Nina goes to incredible lengths to be able to take care of the woman she loves. Two of Us takes the line of the classic marriage vow, “in sickness and in health” and focuses on the in sickness bit. The lengths Nina goes to care for her partner and help her recover are truly moving. Two of Us isn’t an early date movie. It’s for when you truly love your partner and want to let them know that you’d do everything Nina does to care for them in times of trouble. Read my full Two of Us review here.

10. Fraunsee
An underrated date idea is taking a nap together. Admittedly, this is a weird thing to specifically plan a date around. Enter Frauensee. This movie will exponentially increase the likelihood of taking a nice nap with your date. This German film is boring and unremarkable. It’s an easy film to casually drift off to while curled in the arms of someone you love. And when you wake up and find you’ve slept through the whole thing, know that you’ve missed exactly nothing of importance or interest. Check out my full Frauensee movie review here.
Frauensee can be rented or purchased on Wolfeondemand.
