his is a film with an exceptional visual atmosphere. Beyond the visuals, I was surprised to find there is some depth or at least thought that went into Alucarda’s plot. 7.3/10
As the horror-loving lesbian that I am, I’ve seen several adaptions of Carmilla at this point. Styria falls more or less in the middle of these adaptions. 5.6/10
I loved Knife + Heart. The film is a queer update of a genre I already loved. It’s kept all the staples of that genre while managing to make a film that’s gay-friendly instead of homophobic. 8.7/10
While I have a soft-spot for 1970’s horror sleaze, I can’t say The Devil’s Plaything is one of the better offerings. I still had fun with some of the moments but mostly, the movie bored me. 3/10
. I love films that reference an old thing but update it to make it queer. I just think Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl needed about 20% more spookiness to be fully successful.
No one is more surprised than I that I found James Franco’s exercise in lesbian vampire fan fiction actually pretty enjoyable. 6.6/10
If you like the web-series, you will like The Carmilla Movie. However, I am not sure if jumping right into the movie would be enjoyable. While The Carmilla Movie works as an epilogue to the larger series, I do not know how strongly it stands on its own. 6.4/10
Girl Slaves of Morgana Le Fay is a bad and lazy film. The only passion here is for the feeling of being high and it shows. 3.4/10
Ultimately, Alena is spooky and well-paced enough to be at least mildly successful as a horror movie. And even a mildly successful horror movie is a minority in that genre. Still, as much as I’ve seen worse movies than Alena, I’ve seen better ones too. 5.7/10
