The Great Big WLW Film Watchlist

List criteria

  • Only feature length (>60 minutes), fictional films are listed.
  • Films must feature either: A) An explicitly queer, female-identifying protagonist. B) At least two secondary queer female protagonists whose screen time matches or exceeds that of the protagonist. C) In cases of large, ensemble casts, 50% of characters/content must be queer with 50% of that queer content being female.
  • WLW characters must be explicitly, unavoidably queer. Subtext and undertones are for cowards.
  • Bisexual characters and narratives are represented provided that the attraction to women aspect is unavoidable, inarguable and not limited to a singular scene.
  • Polyamorous relationships are represented provided there is romantic/sexual content between two females in said relationship.
  • Wholly pornographic films are not represented. My definition of “pornography” is films whose primary reason for existence is to be masturbated over and have little to no other artistic merit.

Fabulous Site! I wish I had found it earlier as I have been compiling a very long list of lesbian movies and TV over the past 6 months and (~1,300+ so far). You have identified some that I missed.

Also I really like your use of a quasi scientific criteria to identify the movies. I am a geeky lesbian Scientist so understandably I love what you did. LOL. Your list inspired me to begin entering keywords in IMDB so that other lesbian/bi women can find them too!

BTW, your IMDB list is still private so no one can view it.

    Warmest regards, Denise

Thank you for letting me know the IMDB list was private. I have since fixed it. Also, do you have any movies on your monster watch list that I’m missing?

I am doing a file comparison of extracts from my list and yours and will provide you a list of differences. Off hand, I think more recent movies may be missing and also some foreign fllms. I’ll let you know. Feel free to contact me directly should you wish to collaborate. Regards

Love your site. I laugh so hard and agree with you on so many things. I’ve been looking for a contact form but I’ve been using the mobile version, so I’m happy to see this comments section!

Anyway, I just watched the relatively hard-to-find oddball movie that is Gaudi Afternoon (2001), with Juliette Lewis and Lili Taylor as an unlikely couple and narrator Judy Davis hired by Marcia Gay Harden to investigate them. I’m curious about your thoughts on where it is supremely problematic or dated vs. Juliette Lewis being worth watching any movie she’s in. Anyway, thanks for the fun reviews each week.

P.S. – I only came across it after seeing JL portrayed as Harper, the lesbian ‘citizen detective’ of sorts in the tv show Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones, and wondered what other gay-for-pay projects she’s done. I say this affectionately, of course. Anyway, here is an IMDB link to Gaudi Afternoon because I don’t believe it’s on your list above: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235412/

(okay last comment, and all of these are me, btw^) I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere. Bought the used DVD from a library somewhere online.

I actually have watched Gaudi Afternoon. Ultimately I decided it doesn’t quite fit the criteria of the site as Judy Davis is the lead and her querness is questionable. It has a great cast, though!

I do PR for lesbian films and would like to send you screening links if you want to share your name/email address? I currently have a sweet holiday film and a much more edgy drama.

  8. Wingwomen? A flim, that like Girl Picture, presents ace in a normalized fashion… Adele and Melaine do a decent job with a patchy script…
