Butterfly Kiss

The main thing I want you to take away from my review of Butterfly Kiss is that Amanda Plummer is really good and she deserved a way better career than the one she got.

Butterfly Kiss stars Amanda Plummer as Eunice. Eunice is a mentally ill drifter who is looking for a woman she loves name Judith at every convenience store she comes across. She also kills people. Eunice meets a woman named Mimi and the two become lovers. They set off together with Mimi being quite taken with Eunice though not with the whole murder aspect.

What I like about Eunice as a character is that though her actions are far from sane, there does seem to be an internal logic and consistency to her illogical actions. This is a character whose mental state and beliefs were well thought out as opposed to her just doing arbitrary, “crazy” things. Eunice is also far from a one-note queer or even a one-note mentally ill character. Both of those aspects are part of an overall, well-rounded character.

In addition to the writing of this character, I cannot praise Amanda Plummer’s performance in this strongly enough. She is absolutely fantastic in this. Plummer certainly makes the character her own and really disappears into the role.

I do have some issues with the third act as it does get a touch repetitive. Additionally, Eunice finally finding “Judith” is somewhat of an anti-climax. Overall though, this movie is really intriguing and has a unique personality. I’ve seen a weirdly high amount of movies in a genre I am dubbing the gay murder road trip genre but this is one of the better ones. I like its mixture of quirkiness and discomfort. Amanda Plummer is brilliant and there’s really good characterizations. This is a good, strange movie. I recommend it, especially if maybe you’re sick of lesbian films that are bland romances and want something different. It’s definitely different.

Overall rating: 8.2/10
