Girltrash: All Night Long

I was excited for Girltrash: All Night Long. I’d heard some positive reviews and had it recommended by a few people. And based on what I knew about the movie, I thought I’d enjoy it. It looked fun and cool. Sadly, being the joyless husk of a woman that I am, I took no joy in the film. Also, it’s very much not cool.

The film is a prequel to a webseries I have not seen. It follows one night in the life of musicians Tyler and Daisy. Tyler and Daisy have just got a spot in a battle of the bands competition. However, their journey towards this gig is interrupted by various events. Firstly, there is Daisy’s sister, Colby. Colby is in the process of coming out as gay and has a crush on a girl named Misty. Unfortunately, Misty has a crush on Tyler despite Tyler’s attempts to drive her towards Colby. Daisy also has relationship drama in the form of an ex she’s still in love with. The final obstacle between the characters and their show is a criminal named Monique who Tyler owes money. Until Tyler gets Monique this money, Monique’s gonna make Tyler’s life difficult and miserable at any opportunity.

So I didn’t realize Girltrash was a musical. That took me by surprise. The movie opens and suddenly, there’s a musical number. So that was a lot right off the bat. I’m not a huge musical fan and this is absolutely a factor in me not enjoying this movie. So far, the one WLW musical film I’ve enjoyed was Dyke Hard. What I liked about Dyke Hard was it was so over the top and self aware of its own ridiculousness. Girltrash has neither of those things going for it.

This is just a very uncool movie. I knew it was a movie about rocker chicks so I thought maybe the film would have some edge. There’s no edge to this. Girltrash is more of a soft mush of a film. It’s earnest and dorky and sort of embarrassing. The songs really don’t help. This is a story about two women in a rock group but all the songs are pretty standard musical numbers. There’s no bite to any of this.

I also have concerns about the way Girltrash portrays its singular black character, Monique. To start with, she’s basically the only black person in this universe. And then everything she does is a bit of a black stereotype. Her name is Monique Shaniqua Jones and she is a criminal with anger issues who spends the movie terrorizing nice, white ladies. She’s a two-dimensional character whose character traits are mostly basic stereotypes. It’s not good.

Girltrash: All Night Long is a lighthearted musical comedy with exactly no edge that didn’t make me laugh once. Much as it gets full points for the amount of queer lady content (every lead character is a queer woman), I still can’t say it’s good. It is possible this is just because I’m a joyless buzzkill with incorrect assumptions of what the movie would be. I don’t know. All I know was that I didn’t enjoy watching Girltrash. I found it dorky and lacking in self awareness. I did not enjoy it.
