Chloe

The key requirement of a thriller film is right there in its title. A thriller should thrill its audience. Therefore, Chloe is not a successful movie. Far from thrilling me, I found it to be rather dull.

Chloe stars Amanda Seyfried as a call girl named Chloe. She is hired by Julianne Moore to determine if her husband is cheating. He is. Or maybe not. Maybe Chloe is lying when she tells Julianne Moore about the handjob she gave him in a greenhouse. Not satisfied with sleeping with just one member of the family, Chloe then seduces Julianne Moore. She also seduces her son because she’s thorough and wants to collect the whole set, I guess. However, the focus of Chloe’s obsession is definitely Julianne Moore. Chloe starts acting obsessive, unhinged and then someone dies.

Chloe as a movie lives and dies on Chloe as a character. I wasn’t interested in her nor was I scared when she started acting obsessive. Amanda Seyfried plays the character keeping her emotions very close to the chest. Unfortunately, there is not enough subtly or nuance in the directing nor her acting for those emotions to come across. Instead, she just has a fairly flat affect throughout. It’s just not interesting to watch. She fails to drum up the tension that her character is required to do to make this story work.

I don’t have anything else to say about this movie. I just found it dull and uninspiring. It’s competent. I’m not mad at it. But it’s just dull. The only time I would recommend this movie to someone is if they wanted to see Amanda Seyfried have sex with Julianne Moore. Other than that, there are better movies. There are better thrillers. There are better thrillers featuring a dangerous yet sexy bisexual. Overall, Chloe is wildly unremarkable from start to finish.
