Appropriate Behavior is one of the best WLW comedies I’ve seen in a while. It’s also one of the best WLW comedies full stop. 9/10
It’s in the Water isn’t good. However, it’s also not bad enough for me to get particularly passionate about. It’s just a mild failure. 4.4/10
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is broad, cliche and hardly subversive beyond the whole gay thing. But for the audience it’s trying to reach, that is subversive enough. 6.7/10
Booksmart is a very successful, modern high school comedy complete with a diverse cast of characters and an emphasis on female relationships. 9/10
Puccini for Beginners is bad but not notably bad. It’s not interesting enough for that. It’s just another failed romantic comedy. How bland. 4.6/10
Simply put, Addicted to Fresno isn’t funny enough to get away with how ultimately pointless the story is nor how unlikable its characters are. 4.5/10
Kissing Jessica Stein is one of few well-done looks at bisexuality, sexual experimentation and the difference between romantic and sexual attraction. 7.9/10
I’m reminded of that quote, “never half-ass two things, full-ass one thing.” Most genre-blending movies, including today’s movie, So Close, fall into the first category of half-assing two things. 4.9/10
