Threesome Affair is a deeply mediocre TV movie. Mediocre should mean I award it a mixed review. But nah. Threesome Affair’s mediocrity is so unremarkable and uninspiring that it tips the movie into negative territory.
The film’s leads are married couple Max and Katrin. The two have been wed long enough that their relationship is one of routine rather than passion. Enter Franziska, a newcomer to Max’s police department. Franziska or, Siska throws a wrench into Max and Katrin’s relationship by attracting both of them. Max sleeps with her, but the real focus is on the growing relationship between Katrin and Siska. For them, it is more than a one-night stand. Siska awakens long-slumbering passions in Katrina. So, Katrina considers upending her stable life for this new woman.
There’s not much to say about Threesome Affair other than it’s deeply mediocre. This is a very uninspired TV movie. The lesbian aspect is definitely there to drum up interest and potential controversy in an otherwise unremarkable story. For that reason, the lesbian aspect isn’t very strong. It’s absolutely there to titillate and deflect notice from the film’s dull plot. For bonus dull points, the film ends with Katarin making a decisive return to heterosexuality and the institution of marriage. Yawn.
It’s difficult to get at all interested in this film’s bland characters. The only thing interesting about them is their staunch lack of professionalism. All three characters engage in on the job, extramarital flirtation with one another. I don’t care about any character individually or as a couple. This is an especially notable failure with Siska and Katarin. These two characters look so much alike I couldn’t tell them apart for the first to acts. With so much physical similarity, writing a relationship of kindred spirits and true understanding should’ve been an easy slam dunk. Instead, they feel at best like casual acquaintances with an attraction based in their own narcissism.
Threesome Affair feels like a middling cop procedural show. There’s more focus on the cop element than there needs to be. Threesome Affair is a relationship drama, not a procedural. It’s also a movie, not a TV show. Yet so little happens in the film it feels like maybe they had longer plans for these characters? If they did, I wouldn’t watch a series based off the back of this TV movie. There’s nothing unique or interesting to it. Threesome Affair was already a 90 minute waste of time.
